It’s not how the Manitowoc Lincoln football team drew up its home opener.
The Ships (1-2 Fox River Classic Conference) were defeated 49-14 by Green Bay Preble on Friday.
The Hornets took their opening drive 71 yards culminating in a 1-yard plunge to start the rout. The Hornets took control of the line of scrimmage from the onset of the game, forcing the Ships to pass which negated Lincoln’s offensive strength.
On the Ships’ second drive, quarterback Nick Schroeder threw an interception and Preble drove down the field to take a 13-0 lead. The Hornets converted a 3rd and 26 on the drive, not fearing the normally stout Ships defense.
Schroeder wouldn’t complete his first pass until late in the third quarter.
The running game started to get going on the ensuing drive, as running back Ethan Just scored for Lincoln to narrow the deficit to 13-7. The six-point gap was as close as Lincoln would get.
The Ships defense intercepted a Hornets pass in the end zone for a touchback, proving Beast Black had a little fight left. The confidence would be short lived as Preble would score on a 38-yard run to extend their advantage to 21-7 with 10 minutes to go before halftime.
Preble kept pouring it on, scoring on a 57-yard run and a 68-yard pass to take a 34-7 lead into halftime.
With the running clock in effect trailing 49-7 to begin the fourth, Lincoln would score on a 3-yard pass by Schroeder.
Lincoln returns to action when it hosts Ashwaubenon on Friday.
