Playing in one of the toughest small-school baseball conferences in the state, not much was expected of a Quincy squad coming off of a 12-win season.
Instead, the Orioles battled their way to 19 wins, a second place finish in the Big Eight Conference and the sixth district title in program history.
And for leading his team to its turn-around season, Quincy’s Brett Allman was selected as the Enquirer All-Area Baseball Coach of the Year.
Allman headlines the 2012 Enquirer All-Area Baseball Team, as selected by area coaches and the Enquirer sports staff. The Orioles skipper is joined by two Quincy players on the squad in Macabe Brand and Jimmy Strock.
Gull Lake, which held on to the No. 1 ranking in Division 2 for much of the season, leads with three members in Colton Bradley, Lucas Hamelink and Logan Holwerda.
Climax-Scotts had a pair of All-Area selections in Tyler Winn and Logan Simmons, as did Homer with Jared Warsop and Alex White and Olivet with Tanner McCarn and Colin Spencer.
Representing their schools on the All-Area team are Bronson’s Sean Czajkowski, Coldwater’s Zach Watson, Colon’s Kyler Thibideau, Galesburg-Augusta’s Kyle Mallwitz, Maple Valley’s Tyler Hickey, Marshall’s Ryan Konkle and Union City’s Emmett Fraley.
