Prep basketball: Marinette hands Mishicot season-opening loss

Had it gone the other way, it may have ended up being the perfect conclusion to the first game of the new 2012 prep boys basketball season for the Mishicot boys basketball team.

The Indians led for a majority of the game against visiting Marinette on Tuesday, including in the dying embers of the contest, until a layup by Marinette at the buzzer handed Mishicot the 53-52 overtime loss.

Mishicot’s Colten Haack did his best to rally his team, finishing with a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds while teammate Bryan Willman added 15.

Mishicot took a 24-18 advantage into halftime but saw Marinette erupt for 21 point in the third quarter.

The Indians (0-1) return to action when they travel to take on Southern Door on Thursday.

Due to deadline constraints a box score for this game was not available to the Herald Times Reporter as of press deadline.

Howards Grove broke out to a 29-19 lead by halftime and kept the pressure on through the final 16 minutes to take a 64-55 season-opening win at Kiel on Tuesday.

Kiel (0-1) got double-digit performances from Jacob Winkel and Jordan Meyer, who scored 14 and 12 points, respectively. Jack Meunier added a pair of 3-pointers, as did Carter Voelker, and four other Raiders players put points on the board, but not enough to keep up with Howards.

“Typical first game. Not real pretty,” Kiel coach Jamie Arenz said, noting his players struggled in the first half. “It’s one of those typical first games and we’ve got some things we’ve got to work on.”
