Surprise district title: McKinney scored five goals and added an assist as Lakewood defeated Portland 9-1, Maple Valley 6-1 and Stockbridge 2-0 to earn a Division 3 district title at Vermontville. Senior Dylan Durkee and junior Drew Durkee added three goals and four assists apiece as the Vikings won the district that included Lansing Catholic and Stockbridge teams who had earlier defeated Lakewood, and finished ahead of the Vikings in the CAAC White standings.
From coach James LeVeque: “Kalib really stepped up his game. He brought energy to the team, and he worked to create his shot more than in the regular season. Kalib has the strongest shot on the team. He can really stretch a defense. I would venture to say that three of his five goals last week came from outside the 18(-yard line). Kalib’s also a basketball player, so he is used to using his body as leverage. We won the district championship game in part because Kalib spent time marking up on Marcus Prigge, their (Stockbridge’s) star player, and we held him to one shot on goal.”
