Trailing 10-2 just four minutes into the first quarter, the Kiel boys basketball team rallied to lead 23-17 at halftime and never looked back en route to a 56-45 home win over Two Rivers on Friday night.
Jacob Winkel led Kiel, which earned its first Eastern Wisconsin Conference win of the season with the victory, scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 27 points.
Winkel grabbed 16 rebounds — nine offensive — while teammate Seth Woods had 12 points and eight rebounds.
After a strong first-quarter showing and leading 12-6, Two Rivers (2-3, 3-4 EWC) allowed Kiel (2-7, 1-4 EWC) to end the first half on an 11-0 run. Kiel led 23-17 at halftime.
Two Rivers’ Dexter Smith scored eight straight points at one point for the visitors in the third quarter as Kiel led 36-30 entering the final frame.
A 3-pointer by Ethan Willman got Two Rivers to within four points, but Kiel led the entire second half and pulled away in the closing minutes.
Kiel outrebounded Two Rivers 39-25 while Two Rivers was 4-of-9 from the free-throw line to Kiel’s 19-of-27 performance.
Kiel had 20 offensive rebounds in the game and 11 fouls while Two Rivers had 22 fouls with Brett Linzmeier fouling out.
Smith and Linzmeier had 13 points each to lead Two Rivers while Willman added 10 points.
Smith had three of Two Rivers’ seven 3-pointers while Linzmeier and Willman each added two 3-pointers.
Kiel did not make a 3-pointer in the game.
