Prep boys basketball: Lancers fall to Tigers

By

Entering Thursday’s game between two Olympian Conference foes, the Manitowoc Lutheran boys basketball team knew it’d take a strong effort to upset defending conference champion Wrightstown.

After three straight 3-pointers by the visiting Tigers to start the game, the Lancers were in trouble and fell 78-60.

Wrightstown (3-0, 2-0 OC) had the advantage in height, gobbling up rebounds by going over the backs of Lutheran (3-1, 1-1) players without making contact to draw the foul.

The Lancers, led by Jared Muench’s 13 points, tried to jump start the offense with a late run at the end of the first quarter to trail 19-12 after one. Teammates Garrett Buch and Ethan Hillmer added 12 and nine points, respectively, for Lutheran.

In the second quarter, the Tigers continued to dominate the post while scoring in transition after forcing the stop. Lutheran fell behind early in the second as Wrightstown had a 8-2 run to begin the second quarter but the Lancers proved resilient making a 5-0 run of its own.

Trailing 31-21, Lutheran battled back by making a 3-pointer but saw Wrightstown run down the court to keep the Lancers at arms length.

Despite scoring at a good clip, the Lutheran defense had trouble with the size of Wrightstown and the Tigers built a 55-40 lead midway through the third quarter.

As the game progressed, Lutheran worked to stay in the game, but Wrightstown seemed to have every answer.
