Prep boys basketball: Reedsville suffers late home loss

The Reedsville boys basketball team led 25-22 at halftime but a second-half comeback by visiting Algoma gave the Panthers a 58-55 loss on Thursday night.

Reedsville (1-1) was led offensively by Brock Gilsdorf and Cody Schamburek who each had 12 points.

Also for the Panthers, Bryce Wenzel had 10 points.

Seven players in total scored for the Panthers, who committed 15 fouls to Algoma’s 18.

Reedsville was outshot 12-1 from the 3-point line with Gilsdorf making its only 3-pointer.

The Panthers outscored Algoma 13-11 in the first quarter and 12-11 in the second before falling behind after being outscored by five in the third.

Tied 13-13 after the first quarter and still knotted up at halftime 27-27, the Raiders were outscored 41-17 in the second half for the road loss.

Seven players score for Kiel, but only Carter Voelker and Jacob Winkel scored in double figures.

Voelker had a team-high 17 points with Kiel’s only two 3-pointers and Winkel added 12.

Also for Kiel, Jordan Meyer had eight points.

Kiel (0-2) was outshot 5-2 from the 3-point line while the Tigers committed 22 fouls to the Raiders’ 12.

Visiting Howards Grove broke out to a 29-19 lead by halftime and kept the pressure on through the final 16 minutes.

Kiel got double-digit performances from Jacob Winkel and Jordan Meyer, who scored 14 and 12 points, respectively.

Jack Meunier added a pair of 3-pointers, as did Carter Voelker.

“Typical first game. Not real pretty,” Kiel coach Jamie Arenz said, noting his players struggled in the first half. “It’s one of those typical first games and we’ve got some things we’ve got to work on.”
