After a sloppy first quarter, the Roncalli boys basketball team went on an 11-0 run in the second frame and held off a late Milwaukee Riverside rally in a 59-54 non-conference win at the Terry Porter Classic in Milwaukee.
The Jets trailed by as much as eight early on as Riverside threw several defensive and offensive looks at Roncalli, forcing it to make numerous adjustments to the game plan and forced the Tigers to switch to a smaller lineup.
After entering the second quarter down 19-12, Roncalli forced four turnovers on consecutive possessions and went on an 11-0 run to make it 31-28 at the end of the first half.
The Jets recovered by making eight 3-pointers in the first half, despite being outrebounded 16-4, with all of Roncalli’s rebounds being defensive.
The Jets had eight assists in the first half — on all eight of their 3-pointers — while Riverside had not recorded an assist entering halftime.
Riverside (3-1) recorded just three assists the rest of the way — The Jets had 13 — while Roncalli (4-0) was outrebounded 34-10 overall.
The Jets made just one offensive rebound while Riverside had 15.
In the second half, Riverside chipped away at the Jets’ lead — which got to as much as six points — and tied the game up at 36-36 with 3:30 left in the third quarter.
The rest of the way the pair went back and forth, with Nate Lassila making several free throws down the stretch for Roncalli to hold off Riverside.
Lassila finished with a game-high 22 points while teammate Isaiah Bessert added 15 points on five 3-pointers — all in the first half.
Josh Erickson was the only other Roncalli player to score in double digits as he had 13 — only five players scored for the Jets in the game.
