Prep boys basketball: Roncalli routs host Chilton in OC opener

The Roncalli boys basketball team may have started off slow against host Chilton, but it didn’t take the Jets to get hot en rout to a dominating 66-43 Olympian Conference win on Tuesday night.

The game was the OC opener for both squads.

The Jets were held to two points through the game’s first five minutes, but Nate Lassila heated up for Roncalli (2-0, 1-1 OC) and scored 12 points to give the visiting team a 15-9 lead entering the second quarter.

Lassila scored a game-high 26 points while teammate Nick Stelzer was second with 17 points on five 3-pointers as Chilton (1-2, 0-1 OC) played mostly man-to-man defense throughout the night with the occasional full-court press. Isaiah Bessert added 9 points on three 3-pointers for the Jets, who in total had 14 3-pointers. Defensively, Roncalli did not allow Chilton to score more than 13 points in any quarter.

With two minutes left in the first half Roncalli nabbed its first double-digit lead and with Lassila up to 17 points the Jets led 34-19 at halftime.

Lassila added nine points in another dominant quarter by the Jets as they led 55-30 entering the final frame.

With Lassila and most of the other Jets starters taken out, Roncalli was outscored by Chilton 13-11 in the fourth quarter, the only time the Tigers outscored the Jets in any quarter.

The game ended too late for complete individual and team statistics for both teams to be included in today’s print edition of the Herald Times Reporter.

Roncalli will host Hilbert on Thursday in the Jets’ home opener. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
