Mason surrendered late goals in each half during a 2-0 loss to Dexter in a Division 2 regional final match on Thursday.
Dexter’s Max Amann scored off a free kick with 1:40 to go in the first half. Bulldog goalkeeper Josh Flamme collided with a Dexter player and the shot was deflected right to Amann, who put it in the back of the net.
“It was a tough game. We didn’t really look like ourselves,” said Mason coach Nick Binder. “We battled through the first half and happened to give up a goal right at the end.”
The Bulldogs regrouped in the second half and put pressure on Dexter (19-5-3). Bill Wilson had a shot that went just inches wide three minutes in and also had a second chance with eight minutes to go that came up just short.
“We had all kinds of chances,” said Binder. “It just wasn’t our day.”
Dexter scored with 38 seconds left to put the game out of reach.
The Bulldogs, who edged Mattawan 1-0 in a regional semifinal on Tuesday night on a goal by senior Tyler Raab, finish their season at 20-4-1.
Three other mid-Michigan high school boys soccer teams have yet to play in their regional finals.
