Senior Micah Thompson’s goal with 28 seconds remaining on Friday earned Okemos an 8-7 victory over eighth-ranked Birmingham Seaholm and its first state tournament bid since 2009.

Junior Manuel Perez, who had three goals against Seaholm, then scored his third on Saturday with 4.7 seconds left in a third overtime to enable the Chiefs to edge Dexter 15-14. Senior Hunter Landay scored four goals and Lowell Bolton three for Okemos, which next advanced to its first ever regional championship game.

The Chiefs rallied from a 5-1 halftime deficit to pull ahead 7-6 before losing 8-7 to defending state champion and fifth-ranked Ann Arbor Pioneer. Perez scored three goals for Okemos, which will now enter the MWPA (Michigan Water Polo Association) state tournament as the No. 2 seed from the east region.

Okemos will take on third-ranked Jenison at 5:15 p.m. on Nov. 9 at East Grand Rapids High School in the state quarterfinals. The state tournament concludes on Nov. 10 at East Grand Rapids with seventh, fifth, third and first-place games.
