Prep football: DCE earns first win with rout of Appleton West

The D.C. Everest football team got something it desperately craved on Friday night.

A victory.

Eli Jasurda levied a big hit on Appleton West running back Taylor Warmbier on the game’s opening play, setting the tone for the entire evening, as the Evergreens cruised to a 42-6 Valley Football Association North Division victory on Friday night.

The Evergreens came in seeking their first win of the season, after a brutal opening stretch of games led to a 0-3 start. It was apparent how much the Evergreens wanted the win from the opening kickoff, with the intensity they displayed under the lights at Stiehm Stadium.

D.C. Everest suffered all of its losses to undefeated teams — Marshfield, Appleton North and Kimberly — and knew that Friday’s game with the Terrors was a must-win, as a .500 overall or conference record is needed to earn a postseason bid.

“We thought we improved last week, but Kimberly is just a very good football team,” Evergreens coach Luke Coenen said. “We stayed focused and this whole team is committed to improvement and I think they showed that tonight.”

After forcing the Terrors into a three-and-out on their opening posession, the Evergreens marched down the field on seven plays, with Chris Maki finishing it off with a 33-yard scamper. Wyatt Brown added six carries on the drive for 34 yards.

The D.C. Everest running game was the story from the opening snap, rushing for 371 yards, including 226 in the opening 24 minutes. Nick Sierakowski finished with 172 yards of total offense, including a 50-yard touchdown run and a 45-yard touchdown reception.

“Everest football is running the football,” Coenen said. “Our guys did a great job of firing off the ball and it was just a good all-around performance.”
