Quarterback Jacob Johnson is out indefinitely after breaking his thumb just before halftime during DeWitt’s 38-10 loss at Everett on Friday.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound sophomore completed 14 of 26 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns and ran for two more in the Panthers’ impressive 38-14 season-opening win over Mount Pleasant at DeWitt.
“If it heals correctly, we’ve got a shot to get him back at the end of the season,” DeWitt coach Rob Zimmerman said.
The Panthers will have to try to earn a seventh straight league title and a 13th playoff appearance in 14 years without Johnson, at least for a while.
“We’ve had injuries before we have had to overcome. The kids just have to get better,” Zimmerman said. “But the kids are still optimistic. We just have to go out an compete the same way we always do.”
