Surprise! The unexpected will happen in Brevard County this high school football season, because it always does.

But it doesn’t have to be a surprise to close followers of the sport. We try to give you a sneak peek of five local high school football teams that may have what some see as unexpected results this year.

1. Satellite

Just when you thought the Scorpions had sunk back to previous levels with a 2-8 season last year, look out. Maybe it wasn’t the first two years of Andrew Disney’s coaching stint at the school that will be remembered as different.

Twenty-five seniors return, and they’re out to prove it was actually 2011 that was the fluke.

2. Florida Air

Falcons coach John Kraynik admitted preseason opponent Duval Academy was not much of a test, but a 68-0 win can’t be overlooked.

Like Satellite, FAA is loaded with returnees, 23 to be exact. That includes four offensive linemen, and there is no better place than up front to have experience. Here’s a bold prediction: Don’t be surprised if the Falcons not only make the playoffs but push Warner Christian for the district title.

3. Titusville

Could the oft-overlooked Terriers get their bite back? We’ll see what happens on the field, but the arrival of new head coach Andy Price has their hopes up.

Tonight’s game against Pine Ridge is a big one, because the next four are on the road, but if Titusville gets into a rhythm at midseason, that will be just in time to play a role in the Class 5A, District 13 race. Bow wow.

4. Astronaut

The War Eagles lost versatile quarterback Favian Upshaw to graduation as well as its two best linemen in Brian Hepburn and Frankie Glenn. No chance for a big season, right?

Hold on. Astronaut has some solid contributors back, particularly on defense, and the War Eagles always have athletes.

5. Cocoa Beach

The Minutemen may be the most fun team to watch because of an offense that will have receivers running every which way. The key for a big season is making sure ball carriers aren’t also running wild when the other team’s offense is on the field.

If the defense can come through, watch out.
