It was Ithaca’s defense, not its high powered offense, which led the Yellowjackets past the Shelby Tigers 31-14 in Saturday’s Division 6 state semi-final. The Yellowjackets, who have seven shutouts on the season held the Tigers scoreless until a hook-and-lateral into the endzone to make it 24-6 with 6:48 left in the game. The Tigers added another touchdown with 3:43 left.
Luke Bunting had two interceptions for Ithaca, both coming in the first quarter when Ithaca’s offense was struggling to put up any points. Despite three interceptions, Travis Smith, led the YellowJackets offense throwing for three touchdowns and running for a fourth. Smith also had an interception of his own as the Yellowjackets’ safety.
The Yellowjackets will take on the winner of the Constantine and Monroe St. Marry Catholic Central next weekend at Ford Field for a chance at a third straight state title. The Yellowjackets defeated Monroe St. Mary CC 45-35 in the 2010 state final.
