Prep football: Jets' season ends in defensive slugfest

The Roncalli football team wouldn’t score till under three minutes left in the game en route to a 14-6 loss in the WIAA Division 4 Level 2 playoff game on Friday.

Knowing the No. 3 Jets needed to pass the ball to keep the Warriors from loading the box to stop running back Alex Katz, it was a mistake by quarterback Jared Patek which led to No. 2 Lakeside’s first score of the night.

The Warriors drove down the field after the Patek interception and scored on a two-yard touchdown run.

The Roncalli (7-3) defense swung momentum back into its favor by blocking a punt and handing the ball to the offense in Lakeside (10-0) territory. A fumble, recovered by Roncalli, resulted in a 19-yard loss halting the drive.

The Warriors were driving again but Roncalli intercepted a pass, fumbled the ball, and recovered its own fumble to take possession deep inside its own territory to thwart the scoring opportunity.

A last gasp pass by Lakeside at the end of the first half failed, leaving the Warriors clinging to a 7-0 lead over Roncalli at halftime.

A pair of blocked punts, one for each side, kept the crowd excited in the low scoring half while Roncalli recovered its own fumble twice to keep drives going and away from the Warriors offense.

The game was broken open early in the fourth quarter as a long Lakeside run set up the Warriors inside the 10-yard line. Lakeside would punch it in three plays later on a two-yard quarterback keeper.

With both teams struggling to sustain drives, the 2-yard touchdown had the feel of 99-yard bomb. It proved to be all the scoring Lakeside would need, and the deciding margin.

Roncalli wouldn’t go down without a fight though, as quarterback Zach Slattery led the Jets down the field finding Katz on key gains to reach the four-yard line. A false start penalty brought the ball to the nine but Katz would score on the next play on second down but a failed two-point conversion left Roncalli down eight.

Katz would finish the game with 21 yards on the ground on six carries while hauling in three fourth-quarter passes for 63 yards to lead the team in receiving. Slattery would complete 8-of-17 for 96 yards and an interception.

Lakeside would finish off the game by converting a crucial fourth down conversion by the nose of the football to bleed the rest of the clock as Roncalli was out of timeouts.
