Prep football: Lutheran rushes past Lourdes

By

REEDSVILLE Manitowoc Lutheran was making more plays than Oshkosh Lourdes in its WIAA Division 6 playoff opener Friday night. But Lourdes was making the bigger plays.

That changed in the second half, when a regrouped Lancers defense hunkered down and shut down the Knights, holding on for a 27-20 victory at Reedsville High School.

Lutheran (8-1), a No. 3 seed, will face second-seeded Shiocton (8-1) in a Level 2 game next week.

Offensively, senior Peter Menges followed his stout offensive line and barreled through for 139 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. Fellow senior Eric Habermann added 62 yards on 13 attempts.

“Those two are our seniors, and they’ve been doing it all year,” said Lutheran co-head coach Dave Uhlhorn.

That went on all game. Lutheran dominated the trenches on both sides of the ball. Lourdes had just 98 yards rushing on 33 attempts. The Lancers ran for 289 on 53 carries.

“That’s what we do,” added Menges, who also caught a screen pass and dashed 40 yards for a first-half touchdown. “Our o-line has been phenomenal all season.”

Despite the struggles, Lourdes converted two huge plays before the end of the half that put the Knights squarely in the game.

In a span of just 33 seconds, the Knights scored on pass plays of 94 and 75 yards, both aided by defensive miscues by Lutheran.

Just like that, Lourdes led 20-13 at the half.

“It shouldn’t have been that close in the second half,” said Menges. “But we knew we were dominating.”

Lutheran quarterback Caleb Kappelman went just 3-for-9 passing, but was confident leading the offense. He also ran in a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs.

Defensively, Lutheran stepped up in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Jordan Blattler made two important tackles in the open field to stall Lourdes drives, and David Menk made a key stop on fourth down one series before a knock-down of Lourdes’ final pass attempt in the final minute to seal the win.

“All we said at the half, is both plays we knocked ourselves out,” said Uhlhorn. “And we were only down one touchdown. We just wanted to put more pressure on their quarterback in the second half.”

They did, led by defensive ends Aaron Poehlman and Menk. Each came up with big plays, including a huge fourth-quarter sack by Poehlman.
