THROUGH THE FIRES
Junior quarterback Lucas Barner was with the Vikings during an 0-9 campaign in 2010 but helped lead the team to somewhat of a resurgence last season when Everett finished 4-5, upset unbeaten Grand Ledge and fell to league power Holt by just a point. That maturation process should help Barner as he comes into this season. Now at 5-foot-10 and 200 pounds, Barner enters his third year as a starting quarterback at the varsity level, which is a rarity most places.
PLENTY OF SKILL
This team’s biggest strength is what is coming back at the skill positions. Everett brings back a pair of running backs in seniors James Mills and Anthony White and a great tandem of wide receivers in seniors Jaleel Canty and Javon Moore. Canty proved to be Barner’s favorite target last season as Everett surprised many with how far its offense had come. The Vikings scored just 102 points as a team in 2010 and 160 last year, but that number should jump significantly in 2012.
FLIP THEM AROUND
In addition to their prowess on offense, several of the Vikings are outstanding performers on defense too. Mills, who stands 5-foot-10 and 215 pounds, was an all-area selection at linebacker last year and anchors the linebacker corps along with fellow running back White. The defensive backfield is in solid shape, too, with Canty, DiQuan Hunt, Cha’Quan Love and Marquan Howard all returning for Everett.
POSTSEASON PUSH
Everett has not been to the MHSAA state playoffs since 2007, where it fell to Detroit Catholic Central in a Division 1 district final. However, this Vikings team may have what it takes with what it has coming back, including eight starters on offense and seven on defense. Everett has won just six games the previous three years, but has a good chance to match that this season.
