MOVING UP

Nick Boucher, a Lakewood graduate, begins his first year as varsity head coach after serving as junior varsity coach the past two years while Jim Behrenwald ran the varsity team. Boucher, who went on to wrestle at Cleveland State University, also coached the Lakewood freshmen team from 2003-09.

NEW OFFENSE AND DEFENSE

Boucher likes his team’s toughness and ability to play pressure defense, but he would like them to “speed up the learning curve” concerning the 3-4 defense and hybrid of the pistol and shotgun offenses he has installed.

RETURNING ALL-LEAGUERS

Of the five returning starters on offense and four on defense for Lakewood, 6-foot-1, 235-pound senior Lars Pyrzynski made all-league on both sides of the ball in the CAAC White. He will return as an offensive lineman this fall, but he will move from defensive end a year ago to linebacker this season.

TOUGH DIVISION

During the 1990s, when Boucher played at Lakewood, the Vikings put together 5-4 or 4-5 records in seven out of 10 seasons. Two of the years they didn’t have one of those two won-lost records, they were 8-2 and 6-3. Trying to establish that kind of consistency again and qualify for the playoffs for the first time in 10 years is tough when your division includes Division 5 state runner-up Lansing Catholic and a Portland team whose only two losses last season came against Lansing Catholic. The CAAC White also includes Williamston, which went 4-4 a year ago after compiling a 12-2 mark in 2010.
