It was an unbelievable season for the Cougars in 2011, as they smashed offensive records and racked up 13 wins before falling in the Division 5 state championship game to Flint Powers Catholic. Lansing Catholic was able to move farther through the playoffs than it did in 2010, where it lost to Williamston in a district opener. The key now is trying to capitalize on the momentum , which includes as many wins in the past two years (22) as the Cougars had from 2005-2009.

Senior Brock Rucinksi will take over for the graduated Cooper Rush, who moved on to Central Michigan after setting numerous marks during his career at Lansing Catholic. His production in Jim Ahern’s offense was astounding, and Rush showed the skill that would be missed when he was named the Most Valuable Player of the Michigan High School All-Star Game at Alma College in June. Rucinski will have to be sharp if the Cougars are going to come close to approaching the near 43 points per game they averaged in 2011.

One thing helping Rucinski will be the offensive line, a unit that returns three starters. Ryan Shannon and Tim McKay each earned All-CAAC White honors last year for the Cougars and junior Adam Zarotnay, who was the starting center for Rush as a sophomore, returns to help Rucinski.

One of the lone weapons returning offensively for the Cougars is running back/receiver Jack Swain. The senior is back after an all-league junior campaign. Lansing Catholic will need Swain to help lessen the loss of Matt Macksood, who put himself in the MHSAA history books with 94 catches for 1,585 yards and 21 touchdowns last season. He’s now a walk-on at Michigan State. Senior receiver Josh Baker, who started about half of Lansing Catholic’s games last year and was named all-league, will also be needed to contribute.
