Fourcast

THE NEW GUY

Leslie will have to find a replacement for star quarterback Brendon Smith, who was the majority of the offense last season for the Blackhawks en route to an 8-3 season and a trip to the Division 6 district finals. That replacement looks to be senior Joey Kobus. He will be needed to produce right away, as Leslie steps up to Class B .

A FEW PIECES

Making it easier on Kobus will be three players returning at the skill positions. Senior Chanler Carmer and junior John Baughan are a pair of running backs that will carry the load, while senior receiver Jonny Brown will hope to fill the void left by departed standout Kyle Bryson, who was Smith’s favorite target and an LSJ Dream Teamer last season.

STOP GAP

Defense is Leslie’s biggest strength. Brown, Carmer and Baughan all also start in the secondary. The linebacker unit is stacked, led by seniors Gregg Davis and Aaron Beson. That unit will also hope to get an added boost from another pair of seniors in Nate Swab and Bobby Chesney.

NEW DIGS

Leslie will go from life in the SMAA to playing teams from around the state as an independent this fall. Farley’s team is looking forward to a chance to play some larger schools, including a pair from the CAAC leagues in Eaton Rapids on Aug. 24 and Ionia on Oct. 12.
