RESTORE THE ROAR

Life in the KVA has not been kind to Maple Valley, once a perennial football power. The Lions last won a league title in 2001 and hope to post their first winning season since 2005 — their last year in the old SMAA –and rebound from two consecutive 1-8 seasons. “We have to get rid of our losing mentality,” Lincoln said.

QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY

Valley will have just 23 players on their varsity roster, with just eight seniors, but they have experienced players scattered in key positions. One of them, Tyler Hickey, will be a three-year starter at linebacker and take the snaps at QB for the second straight year, and wide receiver Tommy Mudge and running back Garrett Miller will also return. Miller is also a three-year starter on defense, at safety.

SIZE MATTERS

The Lions will bring bulk to the trenches, with Keegan Yost, Zack Rosenberger and Charlotte transfer Brandon Ripley all weighing in at 250 pounds, along with 6-4, 215-pound senior Dayton Ashley. Senior nose tackle Matt Weir will be the fireplug in the middle at 5-9, 190.

SPEED AND SMARTS

Lincoln lists overall team speed and intelligence as two strengths of this year’s Lions. “(We’re a) smart football team because of our discipline and (grade-point average),” he said.
