Fourcast

YOUNG PUPS

Mason doesn’t return a single starter on either side of the ball and has just eight seniors on its 35-man varsity roster, which includes two freshmen and four sophomores. Senior Chris Karcher and sophomore Stone Miller saw significant playing time on the offensive line in 2011, and junior kicker Josh Flamme returns after an impressive sophomore season in which he kicked field goals of 42 and 45 yards. Otherwise, varsity experience is thin.

STREAK ON THE LINE

The young Bulldogs will attempt to extend a streak of four consecutive league titles, three in the CAAC Red and one in the CAAC Gold. Mason has won nine games in three of those four seasons and accumulated a record of 17-2 in league play, 35-8 overall.

STAY HEALTHY!

Mason will replace graduated three-year starting quarterback Thomas McNamara with another tall, strong signal-caller in 6-foot-2, 180-pound junior Nathan Jones. Jones’ only backup, freshman Jarrett VanHavel, is probably more familiar with the offense than most freshmen, being the son of head coach Jerry VanHavel, but he is still a first-year player.

FAVORABLE EARLY SCHEDULE

The Bulldogs may be able to generate early momentum with a home game against another team with a revamped roster in Okemos. Then the next three opponents — Eaton Rapids, Jackson Northwest and non-league Romulus — combined for a 5-22 record in 2011. They may need to sweep all of the first four in order to make the playoffs. Mason hosts a much-improved Charlotte team, along with later games against perennial powers Jackson Lumen Christi and Croswell-Lexington — both on the road.
