St. Patrick will play in a league other than the CMAC for the first time since they first fielded a football team in 1963 — the six-team Southern Michigan 8-Man Conference. The Shamrocks will face three of the five other schools for the first time ever. The Shamrocks last played Tekonsha when they were independent for one season in 2008. St. Patrick last played Battle Creek St. Philip in the old Class D playoffs in 1997 and Litchfield, also in the postseason, in 1994. In addition to St. Patrick, the other schools in the league playing 8-man for the first time are St. Philip and Waldron

As many as five of the eight players on the offense in 8-man football are eligible receivers, both ends and as many as three who line up behind the line of scrimmage. With just three down linemen required, senior John Pline, who started on the offensive line last year, will now move out to wide receiver.

The entire offensive backfield returns, including senior QB Collin Lay and senior running backs Casey Wilcox and Daniel Beachnau, so familiarity should go a long way toward making any tactical transition to the 8-man game easier.

In contrast to the relatively short CMAC road trips to Pewamo-Westphalia, Fowler and Fulton to which they have been accustomed, St. Patrick will be spending quite a bit more time on the bus to away games. Both Waldron and Burr Oak are more than 100 miles from Portland, and the first trip will be the shortest — 51 miles to Battle Creek to face St. Philip in the season opener. The Shamrocks will play all of their opponents, except Litchfield, both home and away, with the first meetings counting as non-league games.
