East Kentwood capitalized on big plays and Grand Ledge mistakes as the Falcons downed the Comets, 40-30, on Thursday night in the high school football season-opener for both teams.

East Kentwood scored on big plays, including a 96-yard kickoff return, a 38-yard run, a 49-yard run and a 20-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

Grand Ledge junior tailback Joe Reverman rushed for 193 yards on 35 carries. He also added 36 yards through the air on three receptions.

Junior quarterback Jalen Brady threw for 194 yards, connecting on 18 of 38 passes and two touchdowns, but also threw three interceptions.

Grand Ledge led 17-13 at the half, but the Falcons scored 27 unanswered points to take a comfortable 40-17 lead with 8:27 to play in the game.

The Comets came back on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Brady to junior receiver Tony Brand. The two-point conversion failed and the score stood at 40-23.

Grand Ledge struck again with 3:46 to play following an onside kickoff recovery. Brady hit senior Connor Anderson on a 3-yard TD pass to cut the lead to 40-29. Senior placekicker Bradlee Taylor kicked his third extra point of the night to cut the lead to 40-30, but it wasn’t enough as the Falcons ran out the clock on the following offensive drive.

Grand Ledge finished with 388 yards of offense, while the Falcons rolled up 212 rushing on 36 carries and 31 through the air on 5 of 10 passing for a total of 243.
