Prep football roundup: Rocori beats Brainerd for first time in 21 years

BRAINERD – Rocori senior Mac Mueller shined in his season debut, amassing 371 total yards and four touchdowns to lead Rocori past Brainerd 48-28 Friday night in Central Lakes Conference action. It was the first time in 21 years Rocori had defeated the Warriors.

Mueller finished wish 198 passing yards and two touchdowns through the air and 19 rushes for 173 yards and three scores on the ground. Rocori (1-0, 1-0) who led 30-0 at the half, also got strong contributions from Adam Dingmann and Jake Herges, who each scored touchdowns.

Brainerd was led by senior Luke Boran, who threw for 147 yards and two touchdowns.

ALEXANDRIA – St. Cloud Tech senior running back Jacob Peterson passed for two scores and rushed for 97 yards as St. Cloud Tech topped Alexandria on the road.

Alexandria quaterback John Volger tossed two scores in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to help the Cardinals climb past Tech.

SAUK RAPIDS – Walker Heinen scored a 39-yard touchdown run with 1:23 left in the game to lift Fergus Falls over Sauk Rapids.

Chris Keske led the Storm offense with 66 rushing yards and a touchdown. Joe Haller threw for 91 yards and two touchdown passes and added 57 yards on the ground.

The Storm trailed 14-0 in the second quarter but scored four straight touchdowns, only to see a 13-point lead evaporate in the game’s final four minutes.

ALBANY – Albany’s Scott Litchy scored on two long first-quarter touchdowns, but Zimmerman scored 30 straight points.

Litchy finished with 138 yards on 19 carries with TD runs of 50 and 60 yards for the Huskies, who led 16-13 after one quarter. Michael Schlangen intercepted a pass for the Albany defense.

Zimmerman’s Jeff Mueller carried the ball 21 times for 156 yards and ran for two touchdowns.

LITCHFIELD – Senior quarterback Zach Kinny completed 17 of 31 passes for 248 yards, three touchdowns and one interception to lead Litchfield past Orono.

Dylan Koll caught six passes for 74 yards and two touchdowns and also had a 59-yard interception return for a touchdown for the Dragons, who trailed 14-8 at halftime.

For Orono, Koller Adzick caught seven passes for 81 yards and one touchdown.

Annandale 30, Waconia 23

WACONIA – John Kalthoff punched Annandale into the end zone three times in the Cardinals’ win against Waconia.

Brett Ahsenmacher hit Matt Miller on a 65-yard pass for Annandale in the fourth quarter and Kalthoff put the Cardinals ahead for good on a 3-yard TD run with 45 seconds remaining.

The score was Lanners’ second touchdown of the game, and effectively put the Dutchmen out of reach in the nonconference matchup. Travis Johnson was 4-for-4 kicking for Pierz (1-0). Melrose was able to get on the board in the fourth quarter with a 50-yard pass from Isaac Sawyer to Seth Noll.

KIMBALL – Kimball cruised in its season opener Friday night, shutting out the Spectrum Sting 49-0 in a nonconference bout.

The Cubs were led by a strong effort from their defense, which limited the Spectrum offense. In the running game, Kimball held the Sting to 65 yards and forced two fumbles.

Austin Schiefelbein led the way for the Cubs on the ground with 74 yards on eight carries and a touchdown. Troy Filzen gained 68 yards on 8 carries along with two touchdowns.

Connor Wittenburg also contributed two touchdowns for Kimball.

HOLDINGFORD – Junior Jeff Fasching threw for a pair of touchdown passes in his debut as St. Cloud Cathedral’s starting quarterback as the Crusaders began the season with a nonconference win over Holdingford.

The Huskers took an early 6-0 lead when quarterback Mitch Messman scored on a 1-yard run on the game’s opening possession. But Cathedral tied the score when Fasching connected with Bryan Bowar on a 7-yard touchdown pass in the second. Fasching then connected with Brady Yoerg on a 6-yard scoring strike in the fourth quarter. He finished with 78 yards passing.

“He threw some nice balls tonight,” Cathedral coach Dean Taylor said. “The biggest thing was our line. We knew they might struggle to start out with. But they got better and better as the game went along.”
