JACKSON – Jackson Lumen Christi clinched at least a share of the CAAC Gold football title, and remained undefeated, with a 34-7 win over Waverly at Whittington Stadium in Jackson on Friday night.
The loss took the Warriors (4-3 overall, 3-2 CAAC Gold) out of the league title race, and forces them to win their last two games to qualify for the playoffs.
After holding the second-ranked Titans (7-0, 5-0) 3-and-out to open the game, Waverly fumbled on their second play from scrimmage, and Lumen’s Matt Malecki picked it up and took it 17 yards the other way for a touchdown with 9:23 left in the first quarter.
After an 8-yard touchdown run by Amani Bass stretched the lead to 14-0, Alante Sims scored the only touchdown for the Warriors, breaking into the open field for a 44-yard dash that cut the lead to 14-7 with 2:43 left in the second quarter.
Waverly’s first possession of the second half ended on an interception that set up Lumen’s next touchdown, a 31-yard run by Khari Willis on the next play, and the Warriors never recovered.
