Prep football roundup: Williamston one win away from playoffs

By

HASLETT – Right before Devin Smyth took the field for Williamston’s final drive, his teammates gave him special instructions.

“They asked me to put them on my back, and I did,” said Smyth.

Smyth scored the go-ahead touchdown with one minute remaining to give Williamston (5-3) a 25-22 win over Haslett (4-5).

In Williamston’s biggest game of the season, the senior running back Smyth shined, rushing for 127 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries.

After a scoreless first quarter, Williamston went up 6-0 with a 97-yard drive that ended on a two-yard touchdown run by Smyth.

The two teams exchanged scores on their next drives before Williamston took the ball with 55 seconds left in the half, trailing 15-12.

A nine-play drive culminated in a 24-yard touchdown pass from junior Ryan Watters to senior Ray Duncan on 4th-and-10 with five seconds left. The score gave Williamston a 19-15 halftime lead.

The second half started the same way the first did – with a scoreless first quarter.

45 seconds into the fourth quarter, Brewer scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to put Haslett up, 22-19.

Brewer converted two fourth down plays on the drive, including the score to put the Vikings ahead. He finished the day with 22 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

His effort, though, was not enough, as Smyth scored on the Hornets’ final drive of the game for the win.

The victory caps an undefeated season on the road for Williamston, but to qualify for the state playoffs it will need to defeat Highland Park at home next Friday.

“We’re going to celebrate this one for the weekend, and then we’re going to focus on Highland Park and getting six wins,” Kersten said.

For the Hornets, it’s simpler – win and they’re in. And Williamston is peaking at just the right time.
