KARRIGAN SMITH

ST. JOHNS sophomore

Fast finish: Smith lowered her best 2012 time from 19:09 while taking ninth at the Carson City regional to 18:30 for a 17th-place finish at the Division 2 state finals on Saturday. She earned all-state for a second straight year at MIS with the fourth-fastest time by an area runner, just seven seconds shy of her 18:23 that tied for best in the area at the 2011 state finals. An academic all-stater, Smith also plays softball and runs track in the spring.

From coach Bob Sackrider: “She was healthy all last year so it came easier. It was just a matter of working hard. I’m more pleased with her success this year because she’s been fighting injuries and issues that would push back a person with less focus. She never let it defeat her. In two years of racing, that was the best I saw from her. After the mile mark, she ran very aggressively in a way I had not seen prior to that. She fought for what she wanted.”
