KAYLEE SCHMITT

DEWITT senior

Key in key victories: Schmitt followed 14 kills and five blocks in a 25-2, 25-18, 25-21 victory over Fowlerville last week with 26 kills and 10 blocks in an 18-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-12 victory over St. Johns on Tuesday that kept the Panthers in second place alone going into the CAAC Red tournament on Saturday at DeWitt. The 6-foot-1 senior middle hitter, who also plays basketball and has earned a 3.92 grade-point average, made first team all-league last season in volleyball. She currently ranks first among area players in blocks at 1.7 per game and a close second to Lakewood’s Emily Kutch in kills per game this fall at 4.2.

From coach Christy Drayton: “She’s been a great offensive leader for us. She’s been our go-to offensive player. When we need a kill, we go to her as we did on Tuesday. We had to have both of those wins to have a chance for the league title on Saturday, and she was great.”
