The battle of unbeatens between the Manitowoc Lincoln girls basketball team and visiting De Pere lived up to it’s billing on Friday night, with the Red Birds prevailing 50-45.
De Pere (7-0, 4-0 Fox River Classic Conference), the defending Division 1 State champions, were a team Lincoln coach Jamie Ullman knew his squad had to compete against to accomplish their goal of winning an FRCC title.
Lincoln (5-1, 3-1) played De Pere tough for three quarters before the Red Birds pulled away with an 11-1 run to start the fourth quarter.
A strong showing towards the end of the game wasn’t enough as 20 turnovers were too much for the Ships to overcome.
After falling behind 4-0 early, the Ships decided to launch from long range with Alyssa Fischer making a pair of 3’s while Alyssa Grotegut made one of her own to give Lincoln a 9-4 advantage.
The duo finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively, to pace the Ships.
The Red Birds responded, tying that game before Shawny Gabriel nailed a floater at the buzzer to give the Ships a 11-9 lead after the first quarter.
Lincoln continued to be hot from beyond the arc, with Kali Hackmann breaking a 20-20 tie with a 3-pointer with roughly two minutes left in the first half. The Ships finished with seven 3’s, including four from Fischer.
It looked like the Ships would take a 25-22 lead into halftime, but Morgan Anderson of De Pere made a shot from beyond half court at the buzzer to tie the game at 25-25 heading into the half.
Neither team took control of the game to start the second half, with Lincoln scoring the first points of the half with a 3-pointer before De Pere answered immediately. Every time the Ships made a shot the Red Birds seemed to respond.
De Pere retook the lead at 32-30 on a deep 3-pointer to regain a slight edge in momentum. A few minutes later the Red Birds built their biggest lead of the game after a 3-pointers of their own for a five-point advantage at 37-32.
A Katherine Wolowicz bucket put the score at 37-34 after three quarters. Everything was set up for an exciting final frame.
To start the fourth quarter, De Pere began to exert their will, taking a 48-35 lead, more than doubling its previous largest lead.
After a quick 7-0 run of its own, Lincoln put a scare into the Red Birds after Fischer drained yet another 3-pointer to trim the deficit to 48-42.
