Sophie Pitz led the Roncalli girls basketball team past host Two Rivers on Saturday 51-42, finishing with a game-high 14 points and three 3-pointers.
The Raiders (5-4) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead over the Jets before Rachel Mocyznski got Roncalli (7-1) on the board. After another quick Two Rivers basket, the Jets responded with a 5-0 run to trim the Raiders lead to 8-7.
Mocyznski would finish with 12 points while teammate Alex Cliff added 10 to give the Jets a trio of double-digit scorers.
Pitz drained a 3-pointer to tie the game at 10-10 moments later, which is how the score would remain at the end of the first quarter.
Roncalli took its first lead of the game with roughly six minutes left in the first half at 14-12 before the Jets and Raiders traded 3’s as Roncalli held a tentative 17-15 lead. After recovering from the rough start, the Jets would trail just once more in the battle between lake shore rivals.
With key players in foul trouble, the Jets were able to avoid further damage to push their advantage to 21-15 before a quick 5-0 run got the Raiders back within one at 21-20.
Pitz made a pair of 3’s in the first half to help the Jets offense while Aly Wanek did the same for the Raiders. Wanek was one of three players for Two Rivers with at least eight points, joined by Mackenzie Walesh (eight) and Alexi Walesh’s team-high 10.
The first half ended with the visitors holding a 23-22 lead with both sides responding every time the opposition attempted to pull ahead.
To start the second half, Alexi Walesh made a pair of free throws to give Two Rivers the lead back at 24-23. The lead would be short lived, as an Erin Jagemann 3 put Roncalli back on top seconds later.
Both sides continued to hit from long distance, but Roncalli’s Pitz seemed to nail every shot she attempted to help give her team a 34-27 lead late in the third quarter.
The frame would end with Two Rivers trailing 34-31 after a foul at the buzzer sent Allie Basken to the line for the Raiders, who made both free throws.
Late in fourth, the Jets were in the double-bonus and took advantage, leading 44-36. Roncalli would finish 13-of-18 from the line in the fourth quarter.
With injuries and fouls mounting, the Raiders finished the game with just five eligible players while the Jets had almost a full compliment in turn.
