The battle between the Olympian Conference’s top two teams lived up to it’s billing on Friday, as the host Roncalli girls basketball team defeated St. Mary Central 58-40.
For almost all of the first half both sides were within two points of each other before the Jets went on a run to lead 23-19 at halftime.
St. Mary’s fought back to take a 31-30 lead before a Roncalli 3-pointer put the Jets back up with 2:13 left in the third quarter.
Roncalli (4-1, 3-1 OC) was determined to show it’ll be a tough squad all year with it’s only loss up to this point being a triple-overtime road defeat by Reedsville on Monday.
The Jets held a narrow 35-34 lead with 7:14 left in game when Sophie Pitz fouled out shortly thereafter. The Zephyr’s (4-1, 3-1) tied the game up at 35 all before taking a slim 37-35 advantage on the next possession. Pitz finished with six points on two 3’s.
Catherine Taddy nailed a pair of free throws on consecutive possessions to give Roncalli the lead again at 39-37 with just under six minutes remaining.
Taddy would be one of three players for the Jets to score in double figures, finishing with 13 points, joined by teammates Alex Cliff (11) and Rachel Mocyznski’s game-high 22.
The Jets finished on a commanding 21-3 run the rest of the way to win comfortably.
