In what turned into a back and forth battle, the Roncalli girls basketball team was able to start its season off on the right foot by defeating highly regarded Division 2 opponent New Berlin West 41-39 on the road Friday.
New Berlin was featured as a team to watch in D2 by WisSports.net, but it was the Jets (1-0) who took command of the game, building a 22-20 lead after the first half. Each team would then post identical margins in both the third and fourth quarters with neither team able to pull away.
“This was a great win for our kids,” said Roncalli coach Ned Jacquart. “It was a typical first game with sloppy play from both sides.”
The game remained right throughout its entirety, with the largest lead belonging to Roncalli of no more than five points at any juncture.
Rachel Moczynski led Roncalli in scoring with 10 points, including one of three Jets 3-pointers. Teammate Erin Jagemann added eight as the only other player to score more than four points for Roncalli.
Roncalli returns to action when it opens up Olympian Conference play on Nov. 30 against perennial OC powerhouse Wrightstown.
