Prep girls basketball: Schultze, Schmitt lift Stratford past Athens

Brooke Schultze had a big second half to lift the Stratford girls basketball team to a 52-42 win over Athens in a nonconference tilt Monday.

Stratford fizzled down the stretch in its Marawood Conference opener last week against Marathon and Schultze didn’t want to see that happen again.

“I knew we had to come out strong in the second half,” said Schultze, who got 17 of her 22 points in the second half. “That’s been our downfall and we did. We needed this win and we got it.”

Kyncaide Diedrich led Athens with 11 points.

Schultze got some help from senior Hannah Schmitt, who was the difference in the third quarter.

While she scored just one field goal, she dished out four assists in the period, handled the ball in the open court and snared several rebounds, all while giving credit to her teammates.

“We finished strong after a slow start,” Schmitt said. “Brooke and Macie (Frueh) both played well. We need to work on our free throws.”

The Tigers led by as many as seven in the third quarter and built a nine-point cushion in the fourth, but the determined Bluejays never gave up and cut the lead to three with 90 seconds left to play in the game.

Schmitt fouled out about a minute later, but that was as close as Athens could come.

Stratford hit 10 of 17 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

“Brooke is intense and for her size she does really well,” said Stratford coach Betsy Miller. “Hannah is the glue for our team and she held us together tonight. Macie Frueh as a freshmen did well. She gained some confidence tonight.”

“We started to figure it out at the end of the first half,” said Athens coach Danielle Diedrich. “We needed to go strong to the hoop but the shots just didn’t fall in the second half. We’re young. We’ve got things to work on and we will.”
