Prep girls basketball: Ships use 19-0 run to defeat host Raiders 51-39

The Manitowoc Lincoln girls basketball team won its season opener against host Two Rivers on Saturday 51-39.

Two Rivers (1-1) held an early 14-6 lead after the first quarter but it wasn’t meant to last.

Lincoln (1-0) stepped up its defensive pressure to start the second quarter, shutting out Two Rivers after finding itself in the early hole.

The Ships started scoring at a torrid pace, erasing an eight-point deficit to take a 20-14 lead into halftime after going on a 14-0 run.

Every time the Raiders would get into their offensive set, the Ships would harass the ball handler forcing several turnovers leading to easy baskets.

Kali Hackmann controlled the game inside the post for Lincoln, grabbing several rebounds on the offensive glass, erasing any chance Two Rivers had one getting second-chance opportunities. Hackmann would score only two of her five points by halftime, proving it takes more than a hot shooting touch to dominate a game.

Alyssa Fischer, meanwhile had a team-high 12, picking up the offensive slack for the Ships while Alexi Walesh finished with nine to pace Two Rivers.

At the start of the second half, Lincoln would keep the run going for 3 more points to take a 25-14 lead before Two Rivers would snap the streak with a free throw. The much needed point stopped a 19-0 run by Lincoln.

With two minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Raiders hit their first field goal since the end of the first quarter to trail the Ships 32-17.

Two Rivers would add another basket to find itself in a 32-19 hole at the end of the third quarter. Back-to-back 3-pointers trimmed the deficit to 34-25 to start the final frame.

A 12-0 run by Two Rivers got the Raiders back in the game but it wasn’t enough despite scoring 20 points in the final frame.

“We did a great job to get back in the game,” said Two Rivers coach Mike Shultz. “We just couldn’t overcome going so cold.”
