Prep girls cross country: Kiel's Williams consistently improved

By

It’s too bad the cross country season is over. Jena Williams looked like she was just getting started.

The Kiel junior got stronger as the season went on, and by the time the postseason was here, she was at the top of the heap.

The Herald Times Reporter Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year took 16th at the WIAA Division 2 State Meet in 15:23.88; the time was nearly 23 seconds better than any other runner in the area.

She finished 16th at State as a sophomore as well.

The week before, Williams took fifth at a sectional meet (area-best 15:46) and was second at the Eastern Wisconsin Conference meet (16:18).

With one year to go, Williams has the drive and determination to leave her mark on the area cross country landscape.

“Jena loves to run which makes a coach’s job very easy,” Kiel coach Tony Grybush said earlier this season. “She is not afraid to challenge herself and really go after it in practice and the meets.”
