Lakewood finished runner-up on Wednesday in a Division 3 regional at Pigeon Creek Golf Course of West Olive, which is located south of Grand Haven.
That enabled the Vikings to qualify for state finals as a team for the first time ever. Grand Rapids South Christian compiled 367 strokes, Lakewood 397 and Grand Rapids Christian 415 to earn spots in the state finals at Bedford Valley in Battle Creek.
“We have sent several individuals to the finals in years past, but it is so cool to see the whole team go for the first time,” Vikings coach Carl Kutch said. “The weather was brutally tough with 35-degree wind chill and wind gusts to 30 miles per hour. On top of that, this course was long (almost 5,700 yards).”
Emily Barker took third place with a 93, Olivia Barker fifth place with a 95, Victoria Hager shot 102 and Kennedy Hilley 107 for Lakewood, which becomes the second team from the CAAC White to qualify for state finals in girls golf along with Lansing Catholic in Division 4. (See story on page 4B).
