The undefeated run for the Roncalli girls tennis team’s No. 1 doubles pair of senior Abby Halla and freshman Tallie Piaskowski ended in the Division 2 State championship match on Saturday.
The No. 1 seeded Halla and Piaskowski (31-1) faced Edgewood of the Sacred Heart seniors and No. 2 Lauren Keller and Morgan Molitor (29-3) in the title match, but fell in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
The pair had defeated junior Maddy Brown and sophomore Hayley Clope of Racine Saint Catherine’s (15-6) in the semifinals 6-1, 7-6 (2) to advance.
It was the second straight year Halla had lost the D2 championship match, losing last season with the now-graduated Jane Salutz.
“I was really excited to get back,” said Halla. “I felt like I had some unfinished business but me and Tallie left everything on the court. She (Tallie) played more like a senior than the freshman she is. I couldn’t ask for a better partner.”
When asked about his No. 1 doubles team’s impressive run, Roncalli coach and Abby’s father, Mike Halla had nothing but praise.
“What an unbelievable, dream season,” said Halla. “This season will go down as one of the best ever according to a lot of people I’ve spoken to in Madison this weekend. Anytime you can end the season standing on the second place podium, that’s special.”
The duo will get a rematch next week at team State, when the same two teams will square off.
“I think we’ll beat them next week,” said Piaskowksi. “They played better than us today, but we get a chance at redemption.”
Also taking part in Day 3 was Roncalli’s Elizabeth Kuenzi (27-6), who advanced to the fifth place bracket and beat Sacred Heart senior Sara Murphy (23-12) in three sets 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 in her first match. In the fifth place match, she fell to Racine’ junior Jenna Zimmerman (28-6) 6-3, 6-2 to finish in sixth place.
“So many great tennis players never stand on the podium,” said coach Halla. “For Elizabeth to accomplish that as a senior it’ll be something she can remember for a long time.”
