Prep hoops: St. Patrick boys fend off Dansville for first win

PORTLAND

Joe Mackowiak scored 13 points and Jesse Smith scored 12 to lead Portland St. Patrick to its first win of the boys basketball season, a scrappy 54-45 CMAC victory over Dansville on Wednesday.

Sophomore Trent Courter also had a team-high 13 points for the Aggies (2-2, 1-1 CMAC), who never led but caused some anxious moments for St. Patrick when they cut a double-digit lead to just four late in the game.

Courter scored nine of his 13 points in the fourth quarter, including a personal seven-point run that made the score 45-41 with 3:18 remaining. But the Aggies were unable to hit a field goal the final two minutes of the game, and the comeback stalled.

“I thought we competed very well tonight,” Shamrock coach Mark Scheurer said. “They made runs at us, and we stretched it back out when we needed to.”

St. Patrick (1-3, 1-2) was without its leading scorer and only returning starter from 2011-12, Collin Lay, who suffered a broken nose in practice this week.

“He’s a three-year starter,” Scheurer said. “We counted on him to do everything, because he’s had the experience to do that. But when somebody goes down, somebody else has to man up and go in, and I thought we did that very well tonight.”

John Carley added 11 points for the Shamrocks, Mackowiak also had nine assists and Smith had 12 rebounds, including two key defensive boards in the closing minutes.

“We picked it up in the second half, and started to play our game a little better,” Dansville coach Cole Feldpausch said. “Defensively, we let them do whatever they wanted and we turned it over too many times.”
