Prep notebook: Siegel soccer draws Clarksville for state quarterfinals

Siegel will open its TSSAA Class AAA girls soccer state tournament with Clarksville when the tourney kicks off Wednesday in Chattanooga.

Siegel and Clarksville are scheduled to play at 12:30 p.m. (CST) at Baylor School, following the Germantown Houston-Knoxville Catholic quarterfinal.

The Lady Stars (14-3-3) qualified for their second straight state tournament with a 3-0 win over Warren County. It marks Siegel’s seventh trip to state in the school’s 10-year history. Siegel won the 2008 Class AAA state championship.

Clarksville (20-4) is playing in its first state tournament in school history. The Lady Wildcats, who have won 12 straight, reached the state tournament after beating perennial state power Hendersonville in the Region 5-AAA championship game followed by a 2-1 win over defending state champion Franklin in Saturday’s Class AAA sectional.

“I think it helps us that we have some familiarity to state with the process and the pageantry,” Siegel coach Eric Shelton said. “But Clarksville is a senior-heavy team that has gone through the wringer, beating Hendersonville and Franklin.

“That experience balances out against a pretty hot team.”

MTCS holds Midnight Madness

High school basketball and wrestling teams can begin holding organized practices today. The MTCS boys tipped off practice with a Midnight Madness practice.

“This was our guys’ idea — not mine,” MTCS boys basketball coach Jason Piercey said. “They’ve been asking for it for a while. A couple of them came forward and asked me about it. I talked to a couple coaches and asked them if they had any major complaints about it.

“If people come up to you and are real excited about it, it’s hard to say no.”

Piercey said the team planned on practicing for about an hour. The team then was going to stay the night at the school.

“We’ll go for a little while, then put them in bed,” Piercey said.
