Prep picks: Overton hopes to hand Antioch first district loss

Overton, a perennial postseason contender, can throw a glitch into Antioch’s plans for a repeat District 12-AAA title with a road win Friday — while also improving its own status.

The Bobcats (4-4, 3-2) had won four of their last five after an 0-2 start but allowed the final 13 points in a surprising 26-20 overtime loss to McGavock despite a 150-yard rushing effort by Willis Word.

Antioch (6-1, 4-0) answered its only loss — at Centenial — with three straight wins, the closest a 27-14 decision over McGavock. The Bears’ last two victories have been by a combined 76 points, with RB Moses Cornelius rushing for 261 yards and five TDs in those wins.

Look for Antioch to stay on course for a season-ending clash with Cane Ridge for the 12-AAA championship. Antioch 27, Overton 17.

Brentwood (7-0, 3-0) at Hillsboro (4-3, 1-2): Brentwood has allowed just 57 points in seven games — while scoring 50 or more in three different outings. RB Ben Green rushed for 182 yards and a TD in the Bruins’ 55-35 11-AAA win over Centennial two weeks ago and is averaging 10 yards per carry. Hillsboro has sputtered in district play, with losses to Franklin and Independence. Brentwood 31, Hillsboro 21.

Independence (5-2, 2-1) at Franklin (4-4, 1-2): Independence has strung together four straight wins, including a pair of 11-AAA victories. Vic Wharton III continues to be a strong special-teams option for the Eagles. Franklin comes off a pair of losses to sub-.500 teams. QB Joe Critchlow has completed 55.3 percent of his passes for 436 yards over three games. Independence 28, Franklin 20.

Pearl-Cohn (3-5, 3-1) at Lipscomb (3-4, 2-1): Pearl-Cohn snapped a two-game slide with last week’s District 10-AA win over Whites Creek. Lipscomb has picked up a little offensive momentum with a pair of wins behind RBs Gabe Glimps and DeAndre Tigg. The two have combined for 535 rushing yards and 10 TDs in the Mustangs’ last two games. Lipscomb 31, Pearl-Cohn 19.

Maplewood (5-3, 4-1) at Stratford (2-5, 2-2): Maplewood’s offense slumped in its matchup with 10-AA leader CPA last week, although QB Kendrick Watts gave the team a late lift. Stratford had lost four straight before edging East Nashville. QB Laquan Horton has thrown for 1,084 yards and rushed for another 213 for the Spartans. Maplewood 27, Stratford 13.

Hickman Co. (6-2, 4-2) at Page (5-2, 5-0): Hickman County is on a two-game roll, most recently surprising District 12-AA rival Lewis County. Page has run off five straight wins, all in district play, and has scored at least 31 points in four of those. QB Zak Mizell threw for 313 yards and four TDs in last week’s victory over East Hickman. Hickman Co. 21, Page 17.

Sycamore (5-2, 2-1) at Goodpasture (2-5, 1-2): Sycamore has scored 21 or more points in each win — including a 43-7 victory last week against Harpeth when RB Dillan Bright ran for 202 yards and two TDs — and has failed to reach that mark in both losses. Goodpasture comes off an open date and a 21-7 loss at 9-AA rival White House. Sycamore 24, Goodpasture 20.

Watertown (6-1, 4-1) at Gordonsville (6-1, 5-0): Watertown’s challenge is to rally from its first loss — a 68-26 defeat in Region 4-A to Friendship. Gordonsville handled Westmoreland 35-6 behind RB Kaelin Cason and QB Payton Watson’s combined 291 rushing yards and five TDs. Gordonsville 34, Watertown 21.

Jo Byrns (4-3, 3-0) at Clarksville Acad. (6-2, 3-1): This will be a pivotal clash in District 10-A. Jo Byrns stayed unbeaten in the league with its win over Houston County as RB Jacob Wakefield rushed for 133 yards and two TDs. Last week, Clarksville Academy allowed 22 fourth-quarter points in a 28-20 loss to Houston County. Jo Byrns 24, Clarksville Acad. 17.

Collinwood (5-2, 3-1) at Wayne Co. (2-5,
1-3): After an 0-3 start, Wayne County has split its past four games, losing last week to Cornersville despite John Bevis’ 203 rushing yards and a TD. Collinwood has dropped two of its last three but defeated Region 6-A foe Loretto last week as Zack Reaves caught four passes for 141 yards and three TDs. Collinwood 32, Wayne Co. 23.

Last week: 42-21, .667.

Season: 404-137, .747.
