Cumberland freshman Megan Maloney avenged a loss to Julia Ruczynski from Sept. 27 to lead the Colts to a Group III South opening round victory.
Cumberland, which lost in the first round of the playoffs last year, will take on Oakcrest in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
For the second straight season, the Cougars swept the Red Raiders in the opening round of the Group I South playoffs. Schalick won all five points in straight sets.
Erin Chard earned payback for a loss against the Indians last year, but Lenape had the last laugh as it beat the Thunderbolts in the opening round of the Group IV South playoffs. Millville topped the Indians 3-2 in the sectional semifinals in 2011.
Chard defeated Kesha Bauer 6-4, 6-3 at first singles on Thursday. Chard fell to Bauer 6-1, 6-0 in last year’s tourney. Harmony Brecht also earned a point for Millville.
Eric Stratoti finished a Daniel Bermudez feed in the second half to lead the Cougars to victory. Ethan Francis made nine saves for the shutout.
Kevin Alexander had a goal and two assists to pace the Crusaders past Highland. Sebastian Calderon and Rich McAdams also scored in the win for Delsea.
A first-half goal from Courtney Cline stood as the game-winner as the Colts (2-8) upset the Cougars (7-4) at home.
Delsea sophomore Laura Hunter scored her first goal of the year — and it came on her 16th birthday — in the Crusaders’ third straight victory.
Less than 24 hours after their night-game victory over Williamstown, Lexi Brown scored the equalizer with 17:06 left in regulation as the Crusaders earned a draw against the visiting Mustangs. Emily Mancini collected an assist on Brown’s fourth goal of the season.
