Prep sports roundup: Cathedral girls soccer blanks Monticello

Ellie Engel scored on an indirect free kick with 10 minutes left in the first half and goalkeeper Mo Schroeder made 12 saves to lead the St. Cloud Cathedral girls soccer team to a 1-0 win over Monticello on Saturday at Whitney Fields. Engel’s goal was assisted by Natalie Barron.

Monticello goalie Kellie Gau had 14 saves.

Senior forward Hayden Speaks finished off a hat trick with the game-winning goal with about 15 minutes left in regulation to give the Crusaders the win at Whitney Fields. Speaks had his first two goals in the first half for Cathedral, which led 2-0 at halftime.

Andy Bales scored on a penalty kick and Zach Beaumaster added a goal in the second half to tie the game at 2 for the Magic.

The Holdingford boys and girls cross country teams both took home victories Friday.

The Huskers boys won via a tiebreaker with Delano. Holdingford’s No. 6 runner, sophomore Jacob Thell, took 20th with a time of 19 minutes to break the tie. He finished 12 places ahead of Delano’s No. 6 runner, sophomore Mike Bunker. Holdingford was led by sophomore Abe Skwira’s fifth-place finish (17:27).

In the girls race, sophomore Emily Wolter took third with a time of 16:17 and led the Huskers to the team title with 38 points. St. Cloud Christian School junior McKenzie Holt won the girls race in 15:27.
