Two of the three sets were close, but Lakewood won all three against Berrien Springs on Tuesday to advance to Thursday’s 7 p.m. Class B state semifinal at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
The Class B No. 1-ranked Vikings won 26-24, 25-13, 29-27 and will next face Dearborn Divine Child, which eliminated Haslett 3-1 on Tuesday.
“It was a battle,” Lakewood coach Kellie Rowland said. “They had a very good left-handed hitter, but we adjusted our blocking scheme and made her uncomfortable.”
Senior Emily Kutch had 14 kills and five aces, senior Brooke Wieland 21 assists and five aces, senior Taylor Shook three blocks, and senior Beth Tingley 10 digs for the 50-4 Vikings.
“In the second set, we took care of business with good passes,” Rowland said. “When we went down in the first and third sets, it was because our passing broke down.
“But with our backs against the wall, we came back. And Brooke came up on the last point and buried it.”
Lakewood has advanced as far as the Class B state championship match in 1995 before losing to Stevensville Lakeshore.
