Ryan Pickerrell scored 10 points and George Knott scored the winning basket with 3:09 remaining as Providence held on to win a defensive battle over rival Clarksville 38-36 Saturday night in the final of the 52nd annual Boys’ Varsity Holiday Tournament at Silver Creek.
Dalton Duley missed the front end of a one-and-one with 19 seconds remaining, and the Pioneers (8-0) had to watch a game-tying attempt by the Generals’ Aidan McEwen go in and out with five seconds left to claim the victory.
Providence was able to hold the ball for more than two minutes at the end despite tight pressure defense by Clarksville (6-2).
“Thankfully, we had a lot of timeouts left to bail us out,” said Pioneers coach Louis Lefevre. “That’s why I don’t like to use them until the end. Using four timeouts, we were able to run out most of what was left on the clock.
“We got the ball in our best free-throw shooter’s hands, and I don’t know if he had missed a free throw all year. He just had a bad shooting night. They had a chance to win, and the ball went in and out, so we kind of won by luck. I don’t want to win by luck. I want to win because we’re the better team.”
Providence is still the undefeated team. It jumped out to a 9-2 lead, then had to find ways to score with Duley missing from the outside. Pickerrell and Knott combined for 18 points in the paint and Cory Cahalan provided two 3-pointers to give the Pioneers just enough offense.
McEwen led Clarksville with 11 points. Austin Johnson added 10 and Andrew Jones nine.
Clarksville trailed 11-8 after one period and 21-17 at halftime. It scored 14 points in the third period to tie the score at 31 and led 35-34 after a McEwen leaner with 4:38 remaining. The Generals scored only one point after that, on a free throw by McEwen.
“They’re a very good team and now we have to go from here,” said Lefevre. “Tonight was Phase I. Phase II will be next Friday. And Phase III will probably be at the end of the year. We haven’t seen the last of them, that’s for sure.”
It marked the 13th time Providence won this tournament, held every year since 1961.
