Richford High School’s Elle Purrier led a dominant Vermont cross-country showing at the Nike Northeast Regionals on Saturday afternoon.
The two-time New England champion from Montgomery defended her regional crown with a time of 18 minutes and 9.4 seconds, about 20 seconds faster than her winning clip from a year ago. CVU’s Taylor Spillane took second (18:15.3) while teammate Autumn Eastman placed 10th (18:54.9) in a field of 216 runners.
National qualifiers the last two seasons, the Redhawks failed to earn another berth, finishing ninth out of 27 teams. Purrier and Spillane each clinched spots for the Nike Cross Nationals, scheduled for Dec. 1 in Oregon.
* Grosvenor, Plunkett excel at Footlocker regionals: At Bronx, N.Y., Montpelier’s Daniel Grosvenor was 13th while South Burlington’s Malcolm Plunkett took 15th at the Footlocker Northeast Regionals at Van Cortlandt Park.
Grosvenor, the Vermont Division II state champion, toured the five-kilometer course in 16:02, beating his personal best by 11 seconds. Plunkett ran a 16:03.3 St. Johnsbury’s Dage Minors was 47th (16:47.8) and Division I champion Marc Brandmeyer of Mount Anthony took 60th (16:57) to highlight the Vermont contingent.
The boys seeded race featured 159 runners, with the top 10 individuals qualifying for the national meet on Dec. 1 in San Diego.
