The Post-Crescent staff writer Ricardo Arguello looks at today’s top games:
Kimberly vs. Appleton West
What: Valley Football Association North-Division football.
When: 7 p.m. today.
Where: Banta Bowl.
Records: Papermakers (6-1, 5-1 VFA-North), Appleton West (1-6, 1-5).
Coaches: Steve Jones, Kimberly; Brent Engen, Appleton West.
All-time series: Appleton West leads 23-19.
Last year: Kimberly defeated Appleton 41-3 at Papermaker Stadium.
For one program, it’s about preparing its game for the postseason. For another, it’s about building for next season.
One thing is for certain, however: Jones isn’t looking past the one-win Terrors.
“Appleton West plays extremely hard and we know that they will be ready to play Friday night,” the second-year Kimberly coach said. “They have very good football players on both sides of the ball and their athletes are very scary when they get in space.”
West quarterback Matt Reader has seven touchdowns on the season and his favorite target has been Austin Berlick. Terrors running back Taylor Warmbier is a physical runner and is averaging more than four yards a carry.
“Our kids have continued to work hard in practice and play hard in games,” Engen said. “We are looking forward to the challenge of playing Kimberly.”
Kimberly is coming off a 48-0 victory over Kaukauna last Friday and has arguably the top quarterback in the VFA in Ben Diedrick. He leads the VFA-North with 19 touchdown passes and receiver Scott Schreiber has been his top target, with 26 receptions for 371 yards and 10 scores.
“Heading into our last week of the (regular) season, our focus continues to be on constant and continual improvement,” Jones said. “Our players have done a nice job of coming to practice this week with a lot of focus and energy. We need to play well on Friday and, hopefully, continue to create momentum heading into the playoffs.”
