Rickards' Briggs signs with Florida

By

Joey Briggs said he knew for so long that he wanted to swim for the University of Florida.
Then he wasn’t sure.
But now, a month after capping off his impressive high-school career with another strong showing at the Class 1A state meet, Briggs is sure again.
The Rickards High senior will compete as a butterfly/freestyle specialist for the Gators after making his decision earlier this fall. He said part of his confusion was an official visit to Drury University – a Division II power located in Springfield, Mo.
“I visited Drury in late September,” Briggs said. “At that point, I was pretty much sold on UF. After that visit, I was then unsure. I liked both schools a lot. I had to consider it and talk with Terry (Maul) and my parents.”
Briggs, who also considered Michigan and Cornell during the recruiting process, said he preferred the academics at Florida over Drury.
“Drury has won NCAAs the last eight years,” he said, “so it’s not the swim program. I just liked the academics at UF more.”
Briggs shared Big Bend Swimmer of the Year honors as a junior and has been a standout in the ATAC club program coached by Maul since his age-group days.
Though he competed in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events at this year’s Class 1A meet, he said the coaches at Florida have told him to begin focusing on the butterfly.
“I think I’m one of the only recruits they have who swims the fly as a main event,” Briggs said. “I may do some of the distance free events, too.”
Briggs joins Chiles seniors Alex Dehner and Alyssa Yambor-Maul as Florida signees.
