State-playoff seasoning decidedly favors Section 4’s champions in state football quarterfinals tonight and Saturday against their Section 3 counterparts.
East Syracuse-Minoa High will be the setting for the quarters in five classifications, from which the winners advance to Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester for Nov. 16-17 semis.
Three Southern Tier participants — Binghamton, Maine-Endwell and Tioga — won intersectional games last autumn, and Chenango Forks will make its 10th state-playoff appearance this century. Union-Endicott last played in states three years ago, but is taking on a first-timer in Nottingham.
Skaneateles and Sandy Creek are also debuting in states, and Christian Brothers Academy is in for the first time since 2005. Cazenovia, competing for the fourth time in the past seven years, is Section 3’s most playoff-tested of late.
As for results, Forks’ has gone 16-8 in state tournament competition and M-E 7-2. Tioga split two games in 2011, Binghamton is 2-5 and U-E 1-8.
No Section 4 program has claimed a third state football title, but three wins by Maine-Endwell and/or Forks would do the trick.
